Rentak MalaysiaKu

As Malaysia Day approaches, GMBB – Kuala Lumpur’s creative community mall – is inviting the public to celebrate the soul of the nation through Rentak MalaysiaKu, a four-day cultural showcase taking place from 13 to 16 September 2025.

Meaning “The Rhythm of My Malaysia”, Rentak MalaysiaKu transforms every corner of GMBB into a vibrant tapestry of sound, movement, stories and flavours that reflect the nation’s rich multicultural identity.

From indigenous art to traditional food, from folk stories to contemporary reinterpretations of heritage crafts, the event offers a unique chance to explore what it truly means to be Malaysian.

Focus On Tradition

A key focus of this year’s programme is honouring the living traditions of indigenous and ethnic communities. Highlights include evocative sapeh performances by Anderson Kalang, contemporary Bidayuh art installations by Dr Kendy Mitot, and the sacred Main Jo’oh dance by the Mah Meri cultural group. Visitors can also take part in workshops such as bunga moyang weaving and batik painting on traditional wau kites.

The event will also spotlight lesser-seen cultural expressions, including a miniature Chinese calligraphy exhibition by Venerable Chi Chern and a live Cantonese opera performance by Madam Kam Sin Kiew – complete with a rare behind-the-scenes look at traditional make-up and costumes.

Heritage Cuisine

Food and tradition come together in hands-on culinary sessions, with Hainanese kopitiam Jiak Kopi hosting a pumpkin ondeh-ondeh workshop, and the Melaka Chetti Heritage Association offering kueh making and joget dance activities – celebrating the legacies of Malaysia’s Indian and Baba Nyonya communities.

Art and storytelling play a central role, with Di Bawah Langit Yang Sama, a group exhibition of over 90 Malaysian artists and poets, presented by ARTO Movement. Other highlights include folk tale storytelling by Hikayat Fandom, a showcase of Malaysian picture-books by The Duke Museum, and interactive music and dance sessions by filmmakers behind Araro Ariraro.

“Community is at the heart of GMBB,” said Lim Ying Hui, General Manager of GMBB. “With Rentak MalaysiaKu, we want to celebrate the everyday rhythms that unite us – in the way we live, speak, create and connect. Malaysia Day is a time to rediscover that, in our diversity, there are shared stories that make us uniquely Malaysian.”
