At IMMERSIO 2024 you can witness 50 digital artworks and installations from over 30 artists.

IMMERSIO 2024 has officially launched, marking an exciting evolution in the Southeast Asian new media art scene. Taking place from November 22 to December 22, 2024, at GMBB, this year’s festival presents an immersive experience that blends culture, technology, and imagination.

The Future Reimagined

Organized by the new media art collective Filamen, IMMERSIO 2024 invites audiences to explore the theme of “Maya,” a Sanskrit word meaning illusion and magic, which also translates to virtual in Malay. This theme reflects the region’s rich history, myths, and diverse cultural heritage, offering a platform for art that reimagines the future through the lens of technology.

This year’s festival features over 50 digital artworks and installations from 32 artists and collectives across Malaysia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. This includes creatives from Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. IMMERSIO 2024 is divided into three exciting parts: the Maya Exhibition, Malaysia and Southeast Asia Collectives, and iNYALA.

Art As A Social Commentary

The Maya Exhibition, curated by Koh Kai Ting, delves into the invisible intersections between technology and tradition. The exhibition is organized into four thematic areas, Chronopolitics, Quest, Diaspora, and Symbiosis, that invite viewers to rethink social and cultural structures in Southeast Asia.

Featured artists include Arrvin Raj, Aw Boon Xin, Cahaya Create, and Tan Yun Yi, among others. The Malaysia and Southeast Asia Collectives section showcases curated spaces dedicated to individual collectives from various countries and regions within Malaysia.

Diversity Highlighted

This space highlights the artistic diversity of the region, with collectives like Kapallorek (Perak), Mud Layar (Selangor), and GengRambutan (Indonesia), each offering unique interpretations of Maya through innovative storytelling and technology.

The iNYALA section also features works by students from The One Academy, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). This platform provides a space for emerging talent to showcase their fresh perspectives and experimental ideas.
