L’observatoire is a new stylish sleeper carriage designed by artist JR

The Venice Simplon-Orient Express, A Belmond Train, is set to debut in L’Observatoire in March 2025, an artist-designed carriage by the acclaimed artist JR. This innovative space combines luxurious travel with a stunning artistic experience, drawing inspiration from astronomical observatories and the Renaissance’s cabinet of curiosities.

Art And History

L’Observatoire is more than just a carriage, it’s an immersive journey through art and history. JR has curated this unique space to evoke the charm of his Parisian studio, featuring personal keepsakes, which will surprise and delight guests throughout their journey. This “studio on wheels” invites guests to indulge their curiosity and sense of adventure while enjoying the breathtaking landscapes of Europe.

A highlight of L’Observatoire is its reimagined Art Deco design, particularly the marquetry, which JR collaborated on with master craftsman Philippe Allemand. Together, they’ve introduced motifs that include urban cityscapes, blending JR’s street art background with the train’s storied legacy.

Interior

Inside, the carriage boasts several micro-environments like a bedroom with a free-standing bathtub, an inviting lounge, and a hidden Tea Room. The design features two oculi skylights, reminiscent of camera lenses, allowing guests to gaze at the sky as they travel. The bedroom is enveloped in green leather, echoing the natural world outside, while intricate stained glass art provides a whimsical touch.

Within the lounge, flexible furniture arrangements create a cosy atmosphere perfect for socialising or private dining. Here guests can enjoy a library stocked with notable literary works and vinyl records that reflect JR’s cultural influences. Hidden behind a secret door lies the Tea Room, featuring a miniature train installation and captivating short films, deepening the artistic experience.
