The legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, a Belmond Train, is set to make history once again by unveiling L’Observatoire, an exclusive sleeper carriage designed by renowned artist JR, during the Biennale Arte in Venice. This unique project will be a highlight of the artistic event, offering a glimpse into the luxurious and imaginative world of this historic train.
The Artist’s Vision
From 17 to 22 April 2024, the public will have a rare opportunity to peer inside this historic carriage through strategically placed viewpoints on its windows. Visitors can witness JR’s intricate design unfold across various environments, including a bedroom, an ensuite bathroom, a lounge area, a library, and a secret tearoom.
Moreover, L’Observatoire represents a significant milestone for the iconic train, becoming the most spacious accommodation on board. It promises to provide guests with an immersive and luxurious experience as they journey across Europe aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.
A Steal
The visionary James B. Sherwood founded Belmond in 1976 with the acquisition of Venice’s landmark property, Hotel Cipriani. His ambition to revive the ‘golden age of travel’ led him to purchase two original sleeper carriages at a Sotheby’s auction in Monte Carlo the following year.
After meticulously restoring 17 carriages, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express embarked on its maiden voyage to Venice in May 1982. This historic arrival was celebrated with a glamorous party at the Hotel Cipriani, where two carriages were proudly displayed in front of St Mark’s Square, enchanting Venetians and visitors alike.
Fast forward 42 years, and the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express continues to lead in preserving and reimagining the art of travel. The introduction of L’Observatoire by JR is a testament to Belmond’s enduring commitment to luxurious and evocative travel experiences. This new addition symbolises a nod to the past while ushering in a new era of railway luxury.
L’Observatoire will officially join the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in 2025, continuing the legacy of this storied train and offering guests an unparalleled journey through history, art, and luxury.
