Prime Video has released the first-look images for Carrie, the first television adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel, ahead of its global premiere this autumn.

Created, written and executive produced by Mike Flanagan, the eight-episode series offers a contemporary retelling of the 1974 horror classic, placing its story of adolescence, isolation and supernatural power in the age of social media.

Summer Howell takes on the title role as Carrie White, a socially isolated teenager raised by her fiercely protective mother, Margaret, played by Samantha Sloyan. After the sudden death of her father, Carrie is thrust into public high school, where she faces bullying, online harassment and growing emotional turmoil while discovering mysterious telekinetic abilities.

Rather than retelling the story scene for scene, the series expands on King’s original novel by exploring the events and relationships that gradually build towards its devastating climax. Across eight episodes, it examines themes of cruelty, empathy and the consequences of collective behaviour.

The supporting cast includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Tota, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard.

Flanagan, whose previous work includes Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, will also direct four episodes. Stephen King serves as an executive producer alongside Flanagan.

Originally published in 1974, Carrie launched King’s career and has sold more than 350 million books worldwide across his body of work. The story was famously adapted into Brian De Palma’s 1976 film, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Carrie will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories this autumn.
