Share

Kampachi celebrated 50 delicious years in grand fashion recently

Kampachi, a leader in Japanese dining in Malaysia, has celebrated its golden jubilee with a spectacular event at EQ Kuala Lumpur. This momentous occasion, held at the hotel’s Diamond Ballroom, gathered guests and business partners to reflect on Kampachi’s remarkable 50-year legacy in Japanese cuisine.

The Beginning

Since its founding in 1974 as a small restaurant at Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur, Kampachi has grown into an iconic brand with three locations in Malaysia, namely EQ Kuala Lumpur, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Plaza33 in Petaling Jaya. A fourth outlet in Hotel Equatorial Penang will reopen in 2026 after a major renovation.

Kampachi holds a unique place in Malaysia’s culinary history as the country’s oldest Japanese restaurant. From its inception, the restaurant pioneered several practices now common in the industry. These include direct sourcing of premium ingredients from Japan. The restaurant was also the first to introduce the popular Sunday Japanese Buffet to Malaysia, over 40 years ago.

Many Highlights

Throughout 2024, Kampachi’s golden anniversary celebrations featured numerous events, highlighting its commitment to authenticity and excellence. Notable activities included collaborations with Nikka Whisky, the grand Ehime Tuna Cutting ceremony, special sake pairing events, and the return of Chef Philip Phuah for an exclusive Teppanyaki engagement.

The grand finale of Kampachi’s jubilee celebration included a Tuna Parade, where Kampachi’s expert chefs filleted a whole tuna in a ceremonial display of skill and precision. This was followed by a speech from Managing Director, Mr. Donald Lim, and an energetic lion dance performance to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Cultures Amalgamated

Guests also participated in Kampachi’s Chinese New Year Lou Sang ceremony, wishing for prosperity and good health in the year ahead. As Kampachi embarks on the next 50 years, the brand remains dedicated to excellence in Japanese cuisine and hospitality. With its Hidden Japan series, Kampachi offers exclusive culinary tours through off-the-beaten-path destinations in Japan.

Looking forward, Kampachi invites everyone to join in the next chapter of its extraordinary journey, continuing to offer unforgettable dining experiences crafted with care and purpose.
