Gaming Cyber Threats Surge In Southeast Asia As Roblox And Minecraft Scams Rise

Southeast Asia has recorded an alarming surge in gaming-related cyber threats, according to new data from Kaspersky. The report reveals an 86% increase in detected threats between the first and second half of 2025, signalling a growing risk for the region’s millions of young gamers.

Popular titles including Roblox, Minecraft and Genshin Impact are being widely exploited by cybercriminals. These games, loved for their creativity and customisation, are now being used as bait to lure users into downloading malicious files or visiting fake websites.

Malaysia has mirrored the regional trend, reporting a 21% increase in gaming-related cyber threats. Across Southeast Asia, Vietnam and Thailand saw the steepest spikes, while Singapore also recorded a notable rise.

Why young gamers are especially vulnerable

Experts say the nature of these games makes them particularly attractive to attackers. In Minecraft, for example, players often download mods or cheats to personalise gameplay — but these can be disguised malware. Meanwhile, Roblox scams frequently promise rare character skins or in-game rewards, only to steal personal or financial information.

The concern goes beyond individual players. Young users may unknowingly share sensitive details such as home addresses or their parents’ credit card information, opening the door to financial theft or further cyberattacks.

“Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting children’s enthusiasm for games and digital experiences,” said Choon Hong Chee of Kaspersky. “These threats don’t just affect the player — they can become an entry point into the entire household.”

How families can stay safe online

With gaming now a central part of youth culture, cybersecurity is becoming a family matter. Experts recommend simple but essential steps: avoid downloading apps from unknown sources, double-check links before clicking, and regularly scan devices for malware.

Parents are also encouraged to start cybersecurity education early, helping children understand safe online behaviour and the importance of strong, unique passwords. Installing trusted security software and using parental control tools can further reduce risks.

As gaming continues to grow across Southeast Asia, staying informed — and cautious — may be the best defence against an increasingly sophisticated wave of digital threats.
