As cocktail festivals continue to proliferate across Asia, Penang Cocktail Week has found its own distinctive identity by looking inward rather than outward. Returning from 15 to 20 September for its fourth edition, the festival once again celebrates world-class cocktails, but this year the spotlight falls on something more enduring: the culture of hospitality that has long defined the island.

Framed by the theme Welcome Home, the 2026 edition is conceived as both a reunion and an invitation. It welcomes back returning bartenders, industry professionals and cocktail enthusiasts while introducing first-time visitors to the warmth, generosity and sense of community that have become synonymous with Penang Cocktail Week.

Rather than focusing solely on headline guest shifts, the festival encourages guests to experience Penang through its people, neighbourhoods and food culture, reflecting the belief that great hospitality extends far beyond the bar.

Five Ways To Experience Penang

This year’s programme is built around five pillars inspired by local expressions that capture the essence of Penang life.

Kaki Lang, meaning “one of us”, celebrates the friendships that have shaped the festival over the past four years, bringing together local bartenders with familiar faces from some of Asia’s leading cocktail destinations for collaborative guest shifts throughout the week.

Makan Angin, literally “to go out and explore”, invites visitors to venture beyond the city’s celebrated bars and discover Penang’s neighbourhoods, heritage and lesser-known corners through curated experiences that connect cocktails with place.

Food, naturally, plays an equally important role. Under the banner of Jiak—the Hokkien word for “to eat”—the programme explores Penang’s celebrated culinary identity through pairing dinners, hawker collaborations and dining experiences that reflect the island’s multicultural flavours.

Knowledge sharing remains central to the festival through Kongsi, where masterclasses, tastings and conversations bring together bartenders, producers and enthusiasts to exchange ideas and celebrate craft.

A Festival That Feels Like Family

The celebrations culminate with Lau Juak, a lively closing gathering at Hin Bus Depot that combines cocktails with live music, art installations, local vendors and the wider creative community in a fitting finale that reflects Penang’s collaborative spirit.

This year’s edition will once again welcome bartenders and industry figures from across Asia and beyond, with guests travelling from cities including Montreal, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh, reinforcing Penang Cocktail Week’s growing international reputation while remaining firmly rooted in its local identity.

As the festival enters its fourth year, its greatest strength lies not simply in the quality of its drinks, but in the atmosphere it creates.
