Experience an evening of musical brilliance with the return of Malaysia’s own maestro, Tengku Irfan, to the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on Saturday, 21 September 2024, at 8:30PM. This remarkable event promises a night of extraordinary music as Tengku Irfan takes the helm of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO).
A Celebrated Return
Tengku Irfan, a multi-talented artist celebrated for his work as a composer, pianist, and conductor, continues to shine in the international classical music scene. His career mirrors the legacies of luminaries like André Previn and Leonard Bernstein. Since his debut, his compositions have graced stages worldwide, earning prestigious accolades such as three ASCAP Morton Gould Awards.
As a pianist, he began captivating audiences at just 11 years old, performing with renowned orchestras and conductors. His journey as a conductor began in 2015, marking him as a dynamic force in the world of classical music.
A Background
Born in the same year as the MPO’s inception in 1998, Tengku Irfan acknowledges the orchestra’s significant role in his career, saying, “The MPO’s existence is paramount; my musical life and career would not have started without it.” His deep connection with the MPO began with his debut in 2009, and he has since achieved numerous international accolades, including the aforementioned ASCAP Morton Gould Awards.
In 2018, he was honoured as the MPO Youth Ambassador, celebrating the MPO’s 20th anniversary by inspiring young musicians and fostering a love for classical music through collaborations with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).
Beautiful MelodiesThe upcoming concert, themed “One Night In KL,” promises to enchant with a compelling program. The evening will commence with Debussy’s evocative Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, setting a tranquil tone. It will then crescendo with Tchaikovsky’s vibrant Symphony No. 4, a piece brimming with rich, dynamic melodies.
Additionally, the MPO will present John Williams’ rare and mesmerising Tuba Concerto, performed by guest tubist Brett Stemple. First introduced in 1985, this concerto is a special treat, given the rarity of tuba concertos.
