Established under the Creador Foundation, the new arts space has appointed Lydia Yee, former Chief Curator of London’s Whitechapel Gallery, as its Artistic Director. The institution aims to support artists from Malaysia and the wider region through exhibitions, commissions, learning programmes and international collaborations.

Located in Medan Pasar, the historic heart of Kuala Lumpur, Muara Arts forms part of a wider cultural revitalisation project that will introduce galleries, a theatre, cafés, restaurants and public spaces to the district. The initiative will also become the first institution in Malaysia to combine a gallery and theatre under a single organisation.

Named after the Malay word for “estuary”, Muara reflects the idea of a meeting point where different cultures, ideas and artistic practices converge. The institution plans to present a year-round programme of rotating solo and group exhibitions alongside newly commissioned works, publications and public programmes designed to engage audiences across Southeast Asia.

The opening exhibition, A–Z of Southeast Asian Art: A Critical Dictionary, takes inspiration from Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen’s ongoing project The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia. Bringing together more than 40 artists from across the region, the exhibition will feature painting, sculpture, textiles, installation, video and works on paper exploring themes related to Southeast Asia’s history, ecology, politics and cultural identity. Muara Arts occupies six restored Art Deco shophouses dating back to the 1930s, covering approximately 20,000 sq ft. The adaptive reuse project preserves the buildings’ historic architecture while introducing museum-standard exhibition facilities.

With its focus on regional artistic exchange and public engagement, Muara Arts aims to become a new platform for contemporary art in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
