InterContinental Hotels & Resorts will open InterContinental Penang Resort in December 2026, marking the brand’s first resort in Malaysia and adding a new luxury retreat to the island’s quieter northern coastline.

Set in Teluk Bahang between rainforest and the Andaman Sea, the resort is positioned away from the bustle of George Town, with its setting shaping much of the guest experience. The 348-room property will combine views of the sea and surrounding greenery with a design language inspired by Penang’s tropical landscape and natural textures.

The resort will also place local culture and cuisine at the centre of its offering. Guests will be able to explore elements of Penang’s Peranakan heritage and island traditions through curated experiences, while four restaurants and bars bring different culinary perspectives to the stay.

At Sulam, Peranakan flavours take centre stage, while Paradiso focuses on Italian cuisine. Shinka offers a Nikkei dining experience, and Coastal provides an oceanfront setting for drinks and dining.

Designed for longer stays

Club InterContinental will provide an additional layer of privacy and personalised service, while Gemala Spa will offer wellness experiences drawing on Penang’s multicultural traditions alongside contemporary treatments.

The resort has also been designed with families and group stays in mind. Facilities include the Planet Trekkers Kids Club, an interactive games room for teenagers, as well as a Grand Ballroom, meeting rooms, boardroom and outdoor lawns for celebrations and events.

For InterContinental, the opening represents a new chapter in its Malaysian presence, bringing its luxury hospitality concept to one of the country’s most culturally distinctive destinations.
