Penang has welcomed a significant new addition to its cultural landscape with the official opening of the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery, an eight-storey institution rising above the waterfront at The Light. After more than two years of development, the gallery opens as both an architectural statement and a centre for international artistic exchange, dedicated to the belief that art can foster understanding, humanity and peace.

The opening ceremony was attended by Penang Chief Minister YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow and former French Prime Minister His Excellency Jean-Pierre Raffarin, highlighting the gallery’s global outlook. Founded by Professor Lin Xiang Xiong, the gallery is built around the mission of “Art for Peace”, positioning Penang as a growing hub for cross-cultural dialogue in the arts.

Art On Show

Housing a collection of over 1,000 artworks, the gallery presents more than 400 pieces throughout the year through a rotating programme of exhibitions. Purpose-built facilities include permanent exhibition floors, a special exhibition hall, an art education centre and an international collaboration conference room. The sixth floor serves as a dedicated international exhibition platform, welcoming artists and curated projects from around the world and encouraging exchange across cultures and disciplines.

While the gallery showcases significant works by Professor Lin, its ambition extends beyond a single artistic legacy. Through exhibitions, joint curatorial initiatives, forums and education programmes, it aims to develop into an open, long-term cultural platform. “Civilisations are not defined by superiority or inferiority, but by their depth,” Professor Lin said, underscoring the gallery’s humanistic ethos.

Cultural Exchange

During the opening, Professor Lin was appointed to the Leaders for Peace Council, an international organisation founded by Mr Raffarin and dedicated to preventive diplomacy and peace education. The appointment reflects a growing recognition of art’s role in cultural diplomacy and global dialogue.

To mark its launch, the gallery is presenting Picasso and Lin Xiang Xiong: A Dialogue Across Time. Centred on the idea of dialogue, the exhibition explores resonances between Picasso’s modernist language and the Eastern cultural perspectives embedded in Professor Lin’s work, addressing themes such as anti-war, anti-poverty and environmental awareness.

The opening also coincided with the Art for Peace International High-Level Art Forum, bringing together cultural, diplomatic and artistic leaders from UNESCO, France, Brazil, Japan, China and Malaysia. Discussions examined governance, peace, artistic responsibility and the power of culture to foster understanding in an increasingly uncertain world.

Currently in its soft-opening phase, the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, offering visitors a new destination where art, reflection and global conversation meet.
