The BMW Shorties 2024 concluded with the announcement of its Grand Prize Winner, Krityishaa A/P Karunagaran, for her heartfelt film Tomorrow is Spring (வருங்காலம் வசந்தகாலம்). This year’s edition, themed ‘PULSE,’ celebrates the creative energy and resilience of storytellers in Malaysia.
The Story
As BMW Group Malaysia’s longest-running cultural initiative, the Shorties have been a springboard for emerging filmmakers, and this year’s winner exemplifies this mission. Tomorrow is Spring is a character-driven 15-minute film about Menaga, a security guard in a low-income community who, after a personal conflict, embarks on a journey of change and self-determination.
The film explores themes of resilience and hope, highlighting the struggles of Malaysia’s lower-income groups while focusing on a woman’s determination to improve her life. Krityishaa’s moving portrayal of perseverance resonated deeply with the judges, earning her RM80,000 in production grants.
The Background
Krityishaa, an Ipoh-born filmmaker, brings over seven years of experience as a director, writer, and producer. Originally a Biotechnology graduate, she pursued her passion for storytelling with a degree in Digital Film and Television from Lim Kok Wing University.
Her current work with Buzzworks Films reflects her commitment to creating relatable stories that resonate with Malaysians from all walks of life. The film’s success was not only seen in the Grand Prize but also in winning supporting awards for Best Director, Best Story, and Best Actress for Piravina Ragunathan, whose performance was central to the film.

Tomorrow is Spring also won the People’s Choice Award, voted for by the public. Judges, including celebrated filmmakers Ghazi Alqudcy and Jeany Amir, praised the film for its emotional depth, compelling characters and visual storytelling. Tomorrow is Spring was hailed for capturing the extraordinary in everyday life.
