Australian comedian Aaron Chen is bringing his latest stand-up show, Technology, to Kuala Lumpur on 20 October — although exactly how much of the show is about technology remains, appropriately, unverified.

The Logie Award-winning comedian, actor and writer arrives at HXC Grand Ballroom with the deadpan delivery, surreal observations and understated absurdity that have made him one of Australia’s most distinctive comedy voices.

It is a fitting subject for Chen. We live in a world where smartphones know where we are, algorithms anticipate what we want and AI can write an increasingly convincing email before we’ve finished deciding what to say. Someone, presumably, needs to make sense of it.

Chen has built his reputation by finding the absurd in the ordinary. Audiences may know him from Fisk, The Dink, Guy Montgomery’s Spelling Bee or his Netflix special Funny Garden. His previous special If It Weren’t Filmed, Nobody Would Believe has accumulated close to two million YouTube views, while A Life in Questions earned an AACTA nomination for Best Short Form Comedy Special.

His live credentials are equally substantial, including Best Newcomer at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2017, Director’s Choice in 2019 and the 2024 MICF People’s Choice Award for highest ticket sales.

Why Technology, Why Now?

Perhaps because technology has become less of a gadget and more of a backdrop to everyday life. We work through screens, socialise through platforms and increasingly outsource everything from memory to recommendations to machines.

That makes Technology an appropriately timely subject for Chen’s particular brand of comedy. As AI becomes increasingly sophisticated, the human tendency to remain confused, distracted and occasionally ridiculous remains reassuringly intact.

“We’ve reached the point where AI can write our presentations, generate our images and occasionally make us question whether we’re still needed in the room,” says Rizal Kamal, CEO of LOL ASIA. “Hopefully, technology can take a joke.”

Whether Chen’s show is actually about technology for the full duration is another matter. Audiences will have to attend to find out.
