The One Shot Comedy Competition Premieres On Disney+ August 12

Share

Disney+ is set to premiere The One Shot, a new Japanese Original comedy competition that challenges some of Japan’s best-known comedians to create the funniest short film using just one punchline.

Launching on 12 August, the eight-part series is created by Daigo, one half of the popular comedy duo Chidori. The format gives each participating comedian complete creative freedom to produce a short film in any location and style of their choosing, with one key rule: every film can contain only a single comedic payoff designed to deliver the biggest laugh possible.

Across the series, the comedians compete in head-to-head matchups, with two short films featured in each episode. The winning entry advances through the competition until one film is ultimately crowned the “Golden One Shot”.

By focusing on a single comic moment, the series explores how performers approach storytelling, timing and humour under an unusual creative constraint.

The One Shot expands Disney+’s growing slate of Japanese original programming, which includes dramas, documentaries and unscripted entertainment. The platform has continued to invest in Japanese productions as part of its broader Asian content offering.

The series joins a catalogue that includes the award-winning thriller Gannibal, alongside a range of variety shows and entertainment titles from across the region. The first two episodes of The One Shot will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ from 12 August, with the remaining episodes released as part of the eight-episode season.
