BBC Player is set to premiere Twenty Twenty Six, a new six-part mockumentary comedy series that takes viewers behind the scenes of the world’s largest football tournament. The series debuts this June, with new episodes released every Thursday.
Created by BAFTA-winning writer John Morton, best known for acclaimed comedies W1A and Twenty Twelve, the series combines workplace satire with the high-pressure world of international football, offering a humorous look at the challenges of organising a global sporting event.
Leading the cast is Hugh Bonneville, who reprises his role as the eternally optimistic Ian Fletcher. This time, Fletcher takes on perhaps his most demanding assignment yet as Director of Integrity for the tournament’s Oversight Team.
Set in Miami, Twenty Twenty Six follows Fletcher as he navigates the complex task of helping manage the biggest football competition ever staged. The tournament spans three host nations — the United States, Canada and Mexico — and features 48 participating countries competing across 16 venues spread throughout North America.
With billions of viewers expected to tune in worldwide, the stakes could not be higher. As logistical challenges mount, competing interests emerge and unforeseen complications threaten to disrupt operations, Fletcher finds himself struggling to maintain order in an increasingly chaotic environment.
The series promises the same sharp observational humour and awkward workplace dynamics that made Morton’s previous productions critical and audience favourites. By focusing on the people working behind the scenes rather than the action on the pitch, the series delivers a fresh and entertaining perspective on one of the world’s most watched sporting spectacles.
Combining global football fever with clever satire, it explores the often-overlooked realities of staging a major international event, where even the best-laid plans can quickly unravel.
Twenty Twenty Six premieres on BBC Player on 11 June, with new episodes available every Thursday.
