Mandarin Oriental Desaru Coast

The former Sirēya Desaru Coast has officially reopened as Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s latest property in Malaysia, marking a new phase for the resort and the wider Desaru Coast destination.

Effective 30 January 2026, the property is now operating as Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast under the group’s management. A ribbon-cutting ceremony held on 5 February marked the transition, attended by senior leadership from Mandarin Oriental and representatives of Destination Resorts and Hotels, the resort’s owners.

Resort Destination

Located along the southeastern shoreline of Johor, the resort sits within 128 acres of rainforest and approximately 1.5 kilometres of beachfront. The wider Desaru Coast area has gained increasing international visibility in recent years, including recognition on TIME’s World’s Greatest Places list.

The rebranding reflects Mandarin Oriental’s continued expansion in Southeast Asia, as the group adds destinations that combine natural settings with experiential travel. The resort features 44 suites and a four-bedroom pool villa, with accommodation designed around open layouts and private outdoor spaces overlooking either the rainforest or the South China Sea.

Design elements throughout the property draw on Malaysian materials and craftsmanship, with an emphasis on integrating indoor and outdoor environments. Family-focused facilities include a dedicated kids’ club, creative activity spaces and outdoor play areas, alongside nature-led programmes designed to reflect the surrounding landscape.

Luxury Retreat

Wellness is a central component of the resort’s positioning, with spa treatments inspired by regional ingredients and traditions. Facilities include yoga spaces, fitness areas and multiple swimming pools, while outdoor activities range from guided nature walks to water sports and cycling.

The resort’s culinary programme will be overseen by Executive Chef Ahmad Fazli Abdulrahman, whose international experience spans several destinations across Asia and the Middle East. Dining concepts will focus on regional ingredients alongside international influences.

Further enhancements are planned across selected guest areas, as well as the introduction of branded residences — a growing segment within the luxury hospitality sector.

With improved regional connectivity from both Malaysia and Singapore, Desaru Coast continues to position itself as a short-haul coastal retreat. The addition of Mandarin Oriental is expected to strengthen the destination’s profile while maintaining its emphasis on nature-led travel experiences.
