Apartamento and Belmond have announced the release of Penang: Recipes & Wanderings Around an Island in Malaysia, the second instalment in the Recipes & Wanderings series. This captivating cookbook and photo essay combines the vibrant traditions of Penang’s regional cuisine with artistic perspectives from renowned photographers and writers.
Original Photographs
The book features stunning original photography by celebrated artist Luo Yang, taking readers on a visual journey through Penang’s lively landscapes, from its bustling streets to lush tropical jungles. Each page is a feast for the eyes, bringing the vibrant soul of the Malaysian island to life.
Alongside Luo’s striking images, the book weaves together contributions from a diverse range of chefs and writers, each with a personal connection to Penang. The book is introduced by André Chiang, Culinary Director of the Eastern & Oriental Express, a Belmond train in Malaysia.
Delicious Recipes
André has also shared four recipes, including Penang Duck Curry, Nasi Lemak, Wanton Mee, and Oyster Omelette, providing readers with a genuine taste of the region to recreate at home. Other celebrated chefs contributing to the collection include Malcolm Lee and Abby Lee, while insightful essays from writers Anna Sulan Masing and Kirthanaa Naidu add depth and context to the cultural exploration.
Prize-winning author Tash Aw shares a specially commissioned piece, enriching the narrative with his literary voice. Beyond just recipes, the book celebrates the people and places that make Penang a culinary gem. It showcases local producers like a durian farm nestled in the jungle, a family-run nutmeg plantation and a traditional kopi house crafting hand-made kueh snacks.
Island Allure
Readers will also discover Penang’s bustling wet markets and hawker centres, where local flavours come alive. With Penang, Belmond continues its commitment to championing fresh perspectives in travel photography and storytelling, and Luo Yang’s work, deemed by Ai Wei Wei as one of China’s “rising stars” in photography, adds a unique and powerful artistic vision to the project.
