GWM Malaysia has reached a new milestone in its regional growth journey with the first export of completely knocked-down (CKD) units of the GWM WEY G9 to Thailand, reinforcing Malaysia’s role within the brand’s ASEAN manufacturing and New Energy Vehicle (NEV) strategy.

The shipment, which departed from Melaka on 26 January 2026, follows the successful local assembly of the GWM WEY G9 in Malaysia. It represents the next phase of GWM’s efforts to build a more integrated regional supply chain while supporting cross-border collaboration and industrial development within ASEAN.

The move signals GWM’s confidence in Malaysia’s automotive manufacturing capabilities, particularly in high-value assembly, technology transfer and export readiness. By positioning Malaysia as a strategic CKD hub, GWM aims to enhance regional scalability while contributing to the development of local vendors, skills and technical expertise.

The milestone shipment was witnessed by GWM Malaysia Managing Director Mr Cui Anqi and Chief Operating Officer En. Roslan Abdullah. Speaking at the event, En. Roslan noted that the export reflects a growing regional foundation for new energy mobility. He highlighted Malaysia’s role in supporting neighbouring markets with advanced NEV products while strengthening supply chain integration across ASEAN.

Business Focused

Mr Cui added that the WEY G9 reflects the convergence of global engineering standards and local craftsmanship. He described the shipment as more than a logistical achievement, marking the beginning of a longer-term roadmap that reinforces Malaysia’s position within GWM’s regional NEV ambitions.

Built on GWM’s dedicated luxury New Energy platform, the WEY G9 units exported to Thailand are assembled locally under global quality standards. The model brings a suite of advanced technologies to the market, including GWM’s Hybrid Intelligent 4WD (Hi4) system, a range of intelligent safety features, and a refined cabin designed to suit both family and business use.

The CKD programme in Malaysia continues to evolve, with deeper localisation, enhanced technical capabilities and talent development underway. These efforts are expected to further strengthen Malaysia’s competitiveness in the NEV space while supporting GWM’s broader regional expansion.

Following this first CKD export, GWM Malaysia is continuing preparations for the official local launch of the WEY G9 in early 2026, with further details to be announced in the coming weeks.
