Volkswagen Tayron Has Officially Been Launched In Malaysia

Share

Serving as the successor to the popular Tiguan Allspace, this premium, locally assembled (CKD) 7-seater SUV slots directly between the VW Tiguan and the flagship VW Touareg in Volkswagen’s Malaysian SUV lineup.

The Tayron Elegance 1.5 eTSI has just be launched in Malaysia for RM189,890. This is a 7 seat locally assembled premium SUV and it has a number of immediate rivals in the Malaysia market.

It is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged mild-hybrid (eTSI) that delivers 150hp/250Nm and is front wheel drive working with a 7-speed DSG and can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 9.6 seconds ad provide driver with a fuel efficiency of 6.1L/100 km.

If you are cross-shopping in Malaysia, its immediate rivals are divided by how they match up against the Tayron’s features and selling price.

1. Direct 7-Seater D-Segment Rivals

These are the traditional three-row family SUVs that match the Tayron’s primary objective: moving seven people with a footprint larger than a standard mid-size crossover.

Mazda CX-8 / CX-80: The aging but highly popular CKD Mazda CX-8 (ranging roughly from RM165k to RM 200k+) has long been the go-to default for a premium-feeling Japanese 3-row cruiser. The upscale Mazda CX-80 serves as its natural premium segment alternative for those cross-shopping the higher-end Tayron R-Line.

Hyundai Santa Fe (CKD): Sitting closer to the RM225k+ mark, the Santa Fe bridges the gap between the Elegance and the R-Line. It offers an aggressively boxy design, plenty of standard kit, and highly competitive smart hybrid powertrains that present a very modern alternative to VW’s mild-hybrid platform.

2. 5-Seater Alternatives (Same Price, Fewer Seats)

Many Malaysian buyers shopping at the RM180k to 200k mark prioritize brand presence and ride refinement over having a third row of seats. If you don’t strictly need 7 seats, these are major price rivals:

Honda CR-V (V or RS e:HEV): Priced from RM178,200, the top-spec CR-V variants are immediate price rivals to the Tayron Elegance. While it only seats 5, the CR-V offers an incredibly spacious second row, bulletproof resale value, and a highly efficient full hybrid system.

Mazda CX-5 (Top Spec Turbo): The top ends of the CX-5 range rub shoulders with the Tayron Elegance’s entry point, offering premium cabin materials and a more engaging driver’s car dynamic, albeit with less outright cargo and passenger space.

3. Chinese Made Rivals

For buyers focused on absolute value for money, the massive influx of premium-leaning, tech-heavy D-segment SUVs from China heavily undercuts the Tayron Elegance on price while challenging the R-Line on features.

Chery Tiggo 9: Launched at RM166,800, Chery’s flagship 7-seater matches the Tayron’s physical size but offers a 2.0L Turbo AWD setup putting out 256PS, giving you performance closer to the upcoming VW R-Line variant for significantly less cash than the entry-level Elegance.

Jaecoo J8 / C9: Positioned as off-road luxury cruisers under the same parent group, these models occupy the RM168k to 180k bracket, boasting highly plush interiors, heavy active safety sheets, and plenty of visual road presence.

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro: Available from RM129,800, it represents the extreme value alternative. It is notably cheaper, but still brings 7 seats and a robust technology package to the table for budget-conscious families.
