Disney+ has officially begun production on The Koreans, an upcoming original series that reimagines the critically acclaimed FX drama The Americans. The project brings together top-tier Korean talent both in front of and behind the camera, marking another major step in the platform’s expanding slate of Korean content.

Set against the backdrop of South Korea’s rapid democratization and cultural transformation in the early 1990s, The Koreans follows a seemingly ordinary middle-class family living a double life.

Beneath the surface of domestic normalcy lies a dangerous secret: both parents are elite North Korean spies embedded deep within South Korean society. As they navigate their covert mission, the series explores themes of loyalty, identity, patriotism, and love—while a determined counterintelligence agent edges closer to exposing them.

All-Star Cast

Leading the cast are Lee Byung-hun, known globally for Squid Game, and Han Ji-min, whose recent work includes Heavenly Ever After. Direction is helmed by Ahn Gil-ho, recognized for his work on The Glory and Stranger. The series is adapted by Park Eun-kyo, based on the original concept by Joe Weisberg.

Produced by IMAGINUS and Studio AA, The Koreans builds on the legacy of The Americans, which earned widespread critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama and multiple recognitions from the American Film Institute.

The new series joins a growing lineup of Korean titles on Disney+, reflecting the platform’s continued investment in high-quality regional storytelling with global appeal. Upcoming and existing titles include Made in Korea, Tempest, and The Tyrant, alongside returning hits such as A Shop for Killers.
