The Art Of Bespoke Design
At the heart of Phantom Dragon is a stunning Bespoke Gallery, where a dragon appears to float like a cloud of smoke. This visual effect is achieved using marquetry, a painstakingly intricate technique that involves the precise cutting and assembly of 297 pieces of wood from four species.
The gallery spans the full width of the fascia, with swirling clouds crafted from Smoked Eucalyptus, Sycamore, and Ash burr, giving depth and life to the design. The black Bolivar veneer shadows make the dragon appear almost ethereal, floating above the surface of the dashboard.
Cultural Symbolism
Phantom Dragon draws on the ancient Chinese legend of two dragons and a pearl, an enduring motif representing balance, good fortune, and enlightenment. According to the myth, the two dragons, protectors of the human realm, were granted a divine pearl by the gods for their good deeds.
The story symbolises harmony and selflessness, values that resonate deeply with Rolls-Royce’s ethos. In the car’s interior, this theme is reflected in every detail, from the meticulously embroidered family name in ancient Chinese calligraphy on the seats to the Bespoke Starlight Headliner featuring an abstract depiction of the dragons.

Rolls-Royce’s Private Office in Shanghai played a key role in bringing this vision to life, showcasing the brand’s deep understanding of Chinese culture and luxury. The collaboration between Rolls-Royce’s design team and local creatives reflects the growing appeal of the brand among younger Chinese consumers.
