The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will bring three emerging soloists together for Beethoven’s Triple Concerto at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC, on 3 October 2026.

Conducted by Michal Nesterowicz, the concert will feature Australian cellist Benett Tsai, Canadian pianist Tony Yike Yang and Malaysian violinist Low Zi Yang as soloists in Beethoven’s unusual concerto for violin, cello and piano.

Written between 1803 and 1804, the Triple Concerto differs from the conventional solo concerto by placing three instruments at the centre of the work. Its structure allows the violin, cello and piano to move between individual passages, duets and larger ensemble exchanges, creating an ongoing dialogue between the three soloists and orchestra.

The concert will open with Miklós Rózsa’s Overture for The Roots of Heaven, written for the 1958 film of the same name. The work draws on the film’s African setting and its story of an environmentalist attempting to protect elephants from slaughter and extinction, with the orchestral writing evoking the movement and sound of a herd crossing the plains.

The three soloists bring varied international experience to Beethoven’s work. Malaysian violinist Low Zi Yang made his orchestral debut with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra at DFP at the age of 13 before performing at The Esplanade in Singapore. He has since appeared in chamber and orchestral settings across Asia, North America and Europe.

Cellist Benett Tsai has performed internationally as a soloist, while pianist Tony Yike Yang became the youngest laureate in the history of the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. His repertoire extends from classical concertos to major works of the 20th century.

The programme concludes with Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 5, a work known for its restrained, lyrical character. First performed by the composer in London in 1943, during the Second World War, the symphony has often been associated with a sense of tranquillity and consolation.
