The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has confirmed that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open on 11 December 2026, marking a significant milestone for the emirate’s growing cultural landscape.

Located within Saadiyat Cultural District, the museum will focus on modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present, offering a platform for artistic exchange while showcasing works from across the globe. The institution is intended to foster dialogue between cultures and present a broader perspective on the evolution of contemporary art.

The opening further strengthens Saadiyat Island’s status as one of the world’s foremost cultural destinations. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi joins a cluster of internationally recognised institutions, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, creating one of the highest concentrations of cultural attractions anywhere in the world.

Art Inspired

Designed by acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, the museum is the largest project in the Guggenheim network, which also includes museums in New York, Venice and Bilbao. Positioned between land and sea on Saadiyat Island, the landmark building features 30 galleries arranged around a central atrium, with ten sculptural cones rising up to 88 metres high. Beyond their striking appearance, the structures provide natural ventilation and shade, supporting the building’s environmental performance.

The museum encompasses approximately 11,600 square metres of indoor gallery space, alongside 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas, providing ample room for large-scale installations, sculptures and multidisciplinary works.

Its permanent collection has been developing since 2009 and reflects a global approach to collecting, with a particular emphasis on West Asia, North Africa and South Asia alongside works from other regions. Rather than following a traditional chronological narrative, exhibitions will explore themes such as abstraction, storytelling, language, popular culture and the relationship between people and place.

Visitors can expect a mix of paintings, sculpture, photography, installations, moving image and digital media, alongside newly commissioned works and site-specific installations designed for the museum.

With its opening set for December, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is poised to become one of the most significant additions to the international museum landscape, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s ambitions as a global centre for arts, culture and creative exchange.
