HBO has announced that its upcoming original drama series Task, created by Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown), will premiere this September, with new episodes airing weekly on HBO and available to stream on Max.

Set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, Task follows a seasoned FBI agent (played by Mark Ruffalo) who leads a specialisaed task force aimed at stopping a wave of violent robberies terrorizing the region. The investigation takes a dark and unexpected turn when the leader of the criminal ring is revealed to be a seemingly ordinary family man, portrayed by Tom Pelphrey (Ozark, Love & Death).

The seven-episode series boasts a compelling ensemble cast including Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton.

Task marks a return to the gritty, character-driven storytelling that defined Ingelsby’s Emmy-winning Mare of Easttown, once again rooted in Pennsylvania’s emotionally and economically complex landscape.

The series is helmed by directors Jeremiah Zagar (We the Animals) and Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Winning Time), who also serve as executive producers. Ingelsby serves as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer.

Additional executive producers include Mark Roybal and Paul Lee for wiip, Mark Ruffalo, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt. Nicole Jordan-Webber and Jeremy Yaches serve as co-executive producers for Public Record.

HBO will premier Task exclusively on Max this September. The series will continue the brand’s tradition of prestige crime storytelling with a strong regional voice and powerhouse performances.
