G-SHOCK Explores Blue Sapphire Crystal in Three New Watches
Share
Casio is exploring new territory in watch design with three G-SHOCK timepieces that incorporate blue sapphire crystal across its MR-G and GMW collections. Leading the release is the MRG-D5000, a limited edition of just 20 pieces worldwide and the first G-SHOCK to incorporate blue sapphire crystal components into a shock-resistant structure.
The release examines how a material more commonly associated with fine watchmaking can be incorporated into a collection built around durability. While sapphire crystal is valued for its hardness and scratch resistance, its brittleness under impact presents a particular challenge for a watch designed to withstand shocks.
Engineering sapphire for G-SHOCK

The MRG-D5000 addresses this through a bezel made entirely from blue sapphire crystal and a proprietary screwless, multi-component construction developed to protect the material against impact. The approach combines the visual appeal of translucent blue crystal with the engineering requirements of the G-SHOCK platform.
Its significance lies in the construction as much as the material itself. Integrating sapphire crystal into a shock-resistant design requires careful consideration of how the components are assembled and how impact forces are managed, particularly in a watch intended to retain G-SHOCK’s defining characteristic of toughness.
The MRG-D5000 occupies the most exclusive position among the three releases, with its production limited to 20 examples worldwide.
Two more interpretations of blue sapphire

The MRG-D5000 is joined by the MRG-B5000SA, which takes a different approach to incorporating the material. The watch features two carats of facet-cut blue sapphire crystals set into the top and bottom of the case. These are paired with a super-hard alloy bezel and blue arc ion plating, creating a contrast between the reflective metal surfaces and the blue stones.
Meanwhile, the GMW-B5000SB brings the sapphire theme to G-SHOCK’s full-metal GMW collection. Rather than using the material across an entire bezel, the model features blue sapphire stones set at four points along its front.

The three watches therefore offer distinct interpretations of the same material, ranging from the extensive use of sapphire in the MRG-D5000 to the more selective placement of stones in the MRG-B5000SA and GMW-B5000SB.
Together, the releases highlight Casio’s continued exploration of materials and construction techniques within the G-SHOCK range. Rather than departing from the collection’s emphasis on resilience, the blue sapphire crystal series explores how a more refined material can be integrated into its established design language.
