The Fendi Baguette ‘hand in hand’ initiative is expanding globally now
The Fendi Baguette ‘Hand in Hand’ project celebrates craftsmanship by bringing together global artisans to reinterpret the iconic Baguette bag, designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997. This collaboration transforms the traditional handbag into an exceptional work of art, blending time-honored techniques with modern design.
Why We Need It
The project highlights the importance of ancient craftsmanship, turning each piece into a unique masterpiece. In 2024, the ‘Hand in Hand’ initiative expands to Korea, following previous partnerships in countries like the USA, Japan, China, Scotland, and Madagascar. The name of the project symbolizes the harmonious connection between the Fendi artisans and local craftsmen.
For this Korean edition, Fendi has partnered with Kim Eun-young, an expert in Maedeup, a traditional Korean art of knotting strings, which has been passed down since 1965. The bag’s striking design draws inspiration from a sunset viewed from the Munsuam Hermitage in Goseong, where clouds softly veil the horizon.
Colours With Meaning
The color palette of the bag reflects this natural beauty, with silk threads dyed using both traditional and modern techniques. Yellowish off-white hues are created using acorns, apricot is derived from arrowroot and ash grey results from a unique dyeing process. These colors are thoughtfully chosen to echo the serene and balanced Korean sunset landscape.
In addition, by incorporating intricate Maedeup techniques, the bag features mangsu, a traditional decoration used in ceremonial clothing during the Joseon Dynasty. Patterns such as waves and trees are delicately woven into the design, creating an elegant, textured effect. The addition of sulsil, twisted silk threads, adds another layer of refinement.
The bag is crafted with 3,432 meters of yarn, giving it a subtle sheen and a timeless quality. The bag’s final touches include handcrafted accessories like amber peaches and plum blossoms, symbols of longevity and grace. These adornments are encased in gilded silver, while the metal buckle features Baltic amber.
The bag’s handle and details are made with luxurious lizard leather, and the inside is stamped with Kim Eun-young’s signature alongside Fendi’s ‘Hand in Hand’ logo. This project underscores Fendi’s dedication to preserving traditional craftsmanship and elevating artisans around the world.
