Behind The Camera
Helmed by Amanda Nell Eu in her directorial debut, Tiger Stripes premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Critics’ Week Grand Prize. The coming-of-age body horror film was also selected as Malaysia’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.
In the film, newcomer Zafreen Zairizal plays 12-year-old Zaffan, who is a rebellious and carefree girl until she starts to experience horrifying physical changes to her body. Struggling to maintain being normal at school, Zaffan is in denial of her inevitable changes and tries to cover herself.
However, when mass hysteria spreads across the school, Zaffan finds herself ostracised by her friends while a visiting Medical Officer makes it his mission to drive away the demon that is rumoured to be haunting the girls.
As the situation escalates, Zaffan, like a tiger who has been dragged out of its habitat and poked at, decides to finally reveal her true self, her wrath, rage and her beauty, to everyone. How does it all play out? Will the students at her school love her or fear her? Watch the film on Netflix to find out.
