Porsche Taycan Turbo S sets new record lap time
The brand Porsche needs no introduction, their prowess is renowned the world over, and now their all-electric Taycan Turbo S with a performance kit sets a new record lap time on the Nurburgring of 7 minutes and 33 seconds, the fastest for a series-production electric car.
The record breaking Taycan was piloted by Porsche development driver, Lars Kern and the car’s performance kit was equipped with Porsche dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) along with the required roll cage and racing seats, the car was entirely the same as any other Taycan. It even weighed the same as a regular Taycan too.
A notary verified the record time and TUV Rheinland confirmed that the record-breaking Porsche Taycan was a standard production model. One of the changes the performance kit offered were 21-inch RS-Spyder-design wheels with road-legal Pirelli P Zero Corsa sports tyres which are now available for all Taycans.
The compound these tyres are made of is similar to racing tyres. Another change the performance kit gave this record-breaking Taycan was a software update for the Porsche 4D Chassis Control to help it work better with the sports tyres.
This system is responsible for analyzing and synchronizing all the Taycan chassis systems in real time. Lars Kern also stated “In the past, only thoroughbred super sports cars got into the 7:33 range. With the new performance kit I was able to push even harder, and the car was even more precise and agile to boot.”
Porsche Tequipment currently offers this performance kit but it is only available in Germany and is limited to only the 2023 model year Taycan Turbo S sedan. These cars began production in late July 2022 and the performance kit is expected to be made available at the end of the year.
Porsche plans to retrofit these cars with the performance kit in the Porsche workshops in Zuffenhausen after delivering the cars. This will not affect the warranty of the Porsche Taycan and transport to and from the factory as well as individual registration and approval of the car is included.
However, Since the racing tyres are designed mainly for track use, buyers will need to switch back to regular tyres when not on the track. The original chassis software does not need to be restored when doing this.
Kevin Giek, Vice President of the Porsche Taycan Model Line said, “We’re delighted that the Nurburgring record for electric cars is back in Porsche hands. This lap time not only shows how much potential lies in our new performance kit, but also confirms once again the sports car genes of the Taycan.”
Of course, the neck breaking power of the Porsche Taycan helped, with 625PS maxing out at 761PS with launch control active, it was no surprise the Porsche Taycan zoomed through the Nurburgring as quickly as it did.
