Muara Arts Kuala Lumpur Opens with Southeast Asian Art Exhibition

A new destination for modern and contemporary art is opening in Kuala Lumpur, bringing together artistic perspectives from across Southeast Asia at one of the city’s most historically significant locations.
Muara Arts, a not-for-profit institution dedicated to Malaysian and Southeast Asian art, opens to the public on 1 November 2026 at Medan Pasar, widely regarded as the historic birthplace of Kuala Lumpur. Its inaugural exhibition, A–Z of Southeast Asian Art: A Critical Dictionary, features more than 40 artists from across the region and runs until 4 April 2027.

Curated by Lydia Yee and Zhen Feng Ang, the exhibition takes inspiration from Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen’s ongoing project, The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia. Organised around the letters of the alphabet, it examines the region through a range of themes encompassing history, identity, culture and politics.
Rather than presenting Southeast Asia as a single, easily defined cultural identity, the exhibition explores its interconnected histories and differences through individual artistic interpretations. Visitors can expect a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, textiles, video, installation and works on paper.
An alphabet of artistic perspectives

Among the featured works are Zarina Muhammad’s mixed-media installation exploring animism, under the letter A, and Martha Atienza’s video installation Our Islands, 11°16’58.4 N 123°45’07.0 E, presented under Archipelago.
Other highlights include works by Nadiah Bamadhaj and Marcos Kueh under Buffalo, a new sculptural collaboration by Pio Abad and Frances Wadsworth Jones under Corruption, and Paul Pfeiffer’s Live Evil (Kuala Lumpur) under Zoomorphism.
The alphabetical approach provides an accessible way to navigate a broad range of artistic ideas, while encouraging visitors to consider how geography, history and shared experiences shape the region.
A new chapter for Medan Pasar

The opening also forms part of a wider effort to revitalise Medan Pasar as an arts, cultural and creative destination. Once a central part of Kuala Lumpur’s commercial life, the historic precinct is being developed around cultural spaces, with Muara Arts Gallery serving as a key component alongside the planned Muara Arts Theatre.
Adding to the institution’s next phase, Chris Lee has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of both Muara Arts and Medan Pasar Realty, with his tenure beginning on 16 December 2026.
Lee joins from National Gallery Singapore, where he served as Assistant Chief Executive and spent a decade in senior leadership roles. With more than 30 years of experience across business and the arts, his work has included audience development, digital transformation and strengthening the commercial sustainability of cultural institutions.
For Lee, the appointment also carries a personal connection. Having grown up in Kuala Lumpur, he recalls Medan Pasar as an important part of his childhood, making his return to the precinct a homecoming of sorts.
With its opening exhibition and longer-term cultural ambitions, Muara Arts introduces another platform for exploring Southeast Asian art while giving a historic part of Kuala Lumpur a renewed cultural purpose.
