Indulge in the music of Antonín Dvorak courtesy of the MPO
Music lovers are in for a treat this February when the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) presents a spectacular evening of classical music. Under the baton of Junichi Hirokami, the MPO will perform two of Antonín Dvořák’s most iconic compositions: Cello Concerto in B minor and Symphony No.9 in E minor (commonly known as From the New World). The special performance takes place at the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC, on Saturday, 8 February 2025, at 8:00 pm.
What’s In A Name
The concert, titled Dvořák Double, will feature the Cello Concerto as the opening piece. This masterpiece, first performed by the London Philharmonic in 1896 with Dvořák conducting, is renowned for its rich, melodic beauty.
The MPO will be joined by Santiago Cañón-Valencia, a Colombian cello virtuoso, making his debut performance at DFP. Born in Bogotá, Cañón-Valencia has won numerous prestigious accolades, including being named a BBC Next Generation Artist in 2022 and earning a Silver Medal at the 2019 International Tchaikovsky Competition.
World Tour
He has performed around the world with esteemed orchestras such as the Phoenix Symphony and Belgrade Philharmonic, making this a concert not to be missed. After the intermission, the orchestra will perform Symphony No.9 – From The New World, one of the most celebrated symphonies of the 19th century.
First premiered in 1893 at New York’s Carnegie Hall, the symphony was inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem The Song of Hiawatha and Native American culture, resulting in a thrilling and evocative composition that has captivated audiences for over a century.
Bonus Fun
There’s also a cello masterclass with Santiago Cañón-Valencia to look forward to. This will take place the evening before, on Friday, 7 February 2025, at 7:00 pm at DFP. This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring musicians to learn from a master.
The concert will be held on Saturday, 8 February 2025, 8:00 pm at the DFP. The conductor will be Junichi Hirokami featuring Santiago Cañón-Valencia as the cellist and ticket prices range from RM229 – RM499 and box office hours are from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 am – 6:30 pm, and 9:00 pm on performance nights.
