See the best of Juho Kuosmanen at HKIFF49 this year
The 49th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF49) is set to spotlight Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen in its renowned Meet the Filmmaker series. Kuosmanen will present his latest work, Silent Trilogy, and engage with the Hong Kong audience, sharing his distinctive film philosophy and artistic vision.
A Familiar Face
A familiar face at prestigious festivals like Cannes, Kuosmanen first gained international recognition with his debut feature, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki, which won the Un Certain Regard Award in 2016. His second feature, Compartment No. 6, was showcased at HKIFF47 and earned the Grand Jury Prize in 2021.
Both films represented Finland at the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film, solidifying Kuosmanen’s place in contemporary cinema. Before his graduation from ELO Helsinki Film School at Aalto University, Kuosmanen caught attention with his short and mid-length films, such as The Road Markers, Citizens, and The Painting Sellers.
What’s New?
His latest film, Silent Trilogy, is a tribute to silent cinema. This collection of three short films captures the unadorned magic and playful spirit of early cinema, blending homage with a fresh contemporary twist. Kuosmanen’s films are known for their focus on modest characters and their poignant, often unsettling journeys.
His ability to deeply explore human nature through nuanced storytelling is complemented by a subtle sense of humor. While his works explore themes of loneliness and alienation, they also offer moments of warmth and empathy, allowing viewers to find hope amidst life’s struggles and melancholy.
Beyond filmmaking, Kuosmanen has ventured into avant-garde opera and theatre, and is the co-founder and artistic director of a film festival in his hometown of Kokkola.
HKIFF49, taking place from 10 to 21 April 2025, will feature a selection of Kuosmanen’s works, including:
-
The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki (2016)
-
Compartment No. 6 (2021)
-
Silent Trilogy (2024)
The full festival programme will be announced in March, promising an exciting line-up of films and cinematic experiences.
