Hong Kong’s Cine Fan programme will devote its September and October edition to two distinctive figures in cinema: Clint Eastwood and Indian filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak.

Titled Clint Eastwood: A Hero Deconstructed, the programme examines Eastwood’s evolution from screen icon to acclaimed director through 10 films. The selection includes his revisionist Westerns The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider and Unforgiven, the latter winning both Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards.

The retrospective also moves beyond the Western, featuring Bird, The Bridges of Madison County, Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. The latter won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Also screening is Juror #2, Eastwood’s final directorial feature and a film that has not previously been shown in Hong Kong cinemas.

Eastwood’s screen legacy will be represented through Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, which established him as an international star.

The programme also marks 50 years since the death of Ritwik Ghatak with Across the River of Sorrow: The Cinema of Ritwik Ghatak. Five films will be screened, including his Partition Trilogy — The Cloud-Capped Star, E-Flat and The Golden Line — which explores displacement and fractured families following the Partition of Bengal.

The retrospective is complemented by The Runaway and A River Called Titas, highlighting Ghatak’s combination of political themes, emotional intensity and formal experimentation.

Cine Fan‘s Golden Age section adds two films by John Ford, How Green Was My Valley and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, while two restored Japanese films from the 1990s — Iwai Shunji’s Swallowtail Butterfly and Morita Yoshimitsu’s Lost Paradise — complete the programme.
