A Five-Night Mekong Cruise Offers a Different Way to Explore Laos

Travelling between Vientiane and Luang Prabang usually involves a choice of road, rail or air. A new itinerary from Avani Hotels & Resorts proposes a slower alternative: five nights aboard a river cruiser, following the Mekong north through villages, craft communities and changing landscapes.
The Bohème Journey begins at Avani+ Lanexang Vientiane, a 197-room hotel that opened in July 2026, before guests travel to Pak Lay to board the 50-metre Bohème. The vessel carries a maximum of 26 passengers in 13 cabins, making the journey a relatively small-scale river expedition rather than a conventional large-ship cruise.
Life along the Mekong

The itinerary places much of its emphasis on communities along the river. Stops include Ban Kok Fark, Ban Xang Khong and Ban Chan Neua, where visitors can learn about traditional practices including Saa paper-making, weaving and pottery.
The route also includes passage through the Xayaboury Dam locks and a visit to Kuang Si Waterfalls, one of the region’s better-known natural attractions. Between excursions, the boat continues upstream, offering a view of river life and the settlements that remain closely connected to the Mekong.
On board, the experience includes full-board dining, daily sunset cocktails and activities such as Lao cooking classes and cocktail workshops. Accommodation ranges from 30-square-metre Deluxe Suites with private balconies to a 60-square-metre Royal Suite with a private sundeck and butler service.
Ending in the former royal capital

The cruise arrives in Luang Prabang by midday, bringing the journey to the town’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed centre. Avani+ Luang Prabang Hotel, the itinerary’s final accommodation, is opposite the Night Market and within walking distance of landmarks including the Royal Palace, Wat Xieng Thong and Mount Phousi.
The town offers a markedly different setting from Vientiane, with its historic temples, morning markets, cafés and artisan shops. Visitors can also observe the daily almsgiving tradition, which remains part of local Buddhist practice.

The itinerary includes at least one night with breakfast at either Avani+ Lanexang Vientiane or Avani+ Luang Prabang, with the option to stay at both ends of the cruise. Transfers, shore excursions and onboard activities are included.
The Bohème Journey starts from USD5,175 for two guests, including taxes and service charges. A minimum six-night stay applies, with further terms and conditions.
