For four decades, Studio Ghibli has built a distinctive cinematic universe populated by fantastical landscapes, memorable characters and stories that explore themes of nature, courage, kindness and resilience. This December, many of those worlds will move beyond the screen with the opening of The Story of Studio Ghibli at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay.

Opening on 18 December 2026, the Singapore presentation spans nearly 3,500 square metres, making it the largest edition of the exhibition to date. Produced by TSUKURU, INC. and M Experience and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, it will feature 12 life-sized recreated worlds drawn from films including Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and The Boy and the Heron.

Rather than presenting the films solely through artwork and production materials, the walk-through exhibition is designed to place visitors inside their settings. Among its highlights is the majestic Ohmu from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, while fans of My Neighbor Totoro can encounter the character beside the Catbus.

One of the exhibition’s centrepieces is a three-dimensional recreation of the bathhouse from Spirited Away. Standing eight metres tall, it is described as the first three-dimensional recreation of its scale, offering visitors a physical interpretation of one of Studio Ghibli’s most recognisable settings.

Interactive multimedia installations run throughout the exhibition, adding movement and sensory elements to the recreated environments. Together, the spaces trace the studio’s evolution across 40 years of storytelling while highlighting recurring ideas around creativity, environmental stewardship and the relationship between people and the natural world.

The exhibition is intended for audiences of different ages, offering longtime Ghibli fans a chance to revisit familiar worlds while introducing younger visitors to the studio’s storytelling.
