Malaysian artist Ryzalman Misran presents a vivid tribute to everyday Malaysian life in Berapa Sekilo? The Rhythm of the Wet Market, opening at AweGallery from 22 May to 4 June 2026.
The solo exhibition features a series of photo-realistic watercolour paintings inspired by the atmosphere and energy of the local pasar basah. Through detailed compositions, Ryzalman captures familiar scenes including seafood displayed on melting ice, handwritten price cards, plastic bags filled with fresh produce, and quiet interactions between vendors and customers.

A recurring motif throughout the exhibition is the handwritten seafood price tag — a symbol the artist uses to reflect shared human experiences regardless of social background. In the context of the wet market, the phrase “berapa sekilo?” becomes more than a question about price, but a reflection of routine, labour and survival.
Backed by more than 15 years of artistic practice, Ryzalman is known for transforming overlooked everyday moments into emotionally resonant visual narratives. His realistic watercolour technique highlights textures, reflections and subtle details often missed in daily life.

The exhibition also explores the cultural and emotional significance of wet markets within Malaysian society, presenting them not simply as places of commerce, but as spaces rich with memory and community.
Born in Johor in 1976, Ryzalman studied at Universiti Teknologi MARA and has produced illustrations for publications and stamp collections for Pos Malaysia. He remains active in Malaysia’s watercolour art scene through several artist groups and societies.
Berapa Sekilo? The Rhythm of the Wet Market runs daily from 11am to 8pm at AweGallery, Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya.
