Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor has launched a new permanent historical exhibition, the ‘Path of History’ tour, alongside a commemorative book that explores the rich heritage of Cambodia’s two iconic Raffles properties.

Located in Siem Reap, the immersive exhibition showcases rare photographs, architectural drawings, vintage artefacts and archival footage that trace the golden age of travel in Southeast Asia and the evolution of luxury hospitality in Cambodia.

The exhibition is complemented by A Tale of Two Hotels – Raffles in Cambodia, a new book by authors Andreas and Carola Augustin. The 160-page publication chronicles the history of Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor and Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh, while highlighting the pioneering era of international travel and exploration in the region.

A Journey Back In Time

Available exclusively to in-house guests, the ‘Path of History’ tour is led by a dedicated Raffles historian and explores the early decades of global travel between 1900 and 1940, when steamships and early aircraft opened Southeast Asia to adventurous travellers from around the world.

“We are delighted and honoured to showcase a seminal early period of international travel, when visitors from around the world first discovered the wonders of Cambodia,” said Joseph Colina, General Manager of Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor.

“Our new ‘Grand Path of History’ tour chronicles this story alongside that of Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, whose illustrious 96-year past intertwines with those pioneering arrivals.”

The accompanying book also highlights Cambodia’s efforts to promote its cultural heritage internationally, from the Royal Ballet of Cambodia’s performances in Paris to visits by notable figures including actor Charlie Chaplin.

Hospitality Legacy

Dagmar Lyons, General Manager of Raffles Hotel Le Royal, said the publication sheds light on a remarkable period in the country’s history while celebrating the enduring legacy of both hotels.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal opened in 1929 and today features 175 rooms and suites following a comprehensive restoration completed in 2019. Its sister property, Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, opened in 1932 as a base for archaeologists and explorers visiting Angkor Wat and remains one of Cambodia’s most celebrated heritage hotels.

Both properties were recognised with MICHELIN Keys in Cambodia’s inaugural MICHELIN Guide selection and continue to rank among the country’s most prestigious luxury destinations.

The launch of the ‘Path of History’ tour and new book further reinforces Raffles Cambodia’s commitment to preserving and sharing the stories that have shaped both the nation’s tourism heritage and the legacy of luxury travel in Southeast Asia.
