Li Auto Premium Chinese Brand Coming To Malaysia
Share
Have you heard of Li Auto? This is the next new premium Chinese automotive brand targeting to launch in Malaysia.
The recruitment listing is for a General Manager and Global Channel Strategy & Growth Manager marks a clear indication for Li Auto’s regional play.
As one of China’s leading premium new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturers, Li Auto (Li Xiang) is preparing its entry into right-hand-drive (RHD) markets, bringing its extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to Southeast Asia.

The move will have Li Auto Malaysian staff formulating channel expansion strategies, setting up localised dealer networks, manage regulatory compliance and align local operations with global headquarters.
Establishing an operational foothold in Malaysia positions Li Auto alongside existing Chinese premium entrants like Zeekr, BYD (Denza), and XPeng.
Meanwhile in case you didn’t know this, Li Auto built its reputation in China around Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) which are electric vehicles that utilise a small petrol engine solely as a generator to charge the battery.

Malaysia’s current tax incentives for New Energy Vehicles primarily target 100% Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), granting import and excise duty exemptions for CBU units.
Under Malaysian tax structures, EREVs carry an internal combustion engine (ICE) component. Without specific policy adjustments, EREVs may not qualify for full CBU EV tax exemptions, making them subject to standard import and excise duties.
To maximise tax benefits before CBU exemptions expire, Li Auto may prioritise pure BEVs such as the Li Mega MPV or upcoming pure-electric L-series variants over its EREV lineup for initial RHD export markets.
Li Auto’s target audience consists of upper-middle-class families seeking spacious multi-seater vehicles (6- or 7-seaters) packed with digital luxury, smart screens, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Li Auto L7 / L8 EREV / BEV will have a target selling price from RM220,000 to RM300,000 (Luxury 5/6-seater SUV with family entertainment focus).
Li Mega/Pure BEV will be from RM380,000 to RM450,000 and this is a ultra-futuristic luxury MPV targeting Alphard/Vellfire buyers.
In China, Li Auto popularized the concept of “refrigerator, color TV, and big sofa” (bingxiang, caidian, da shafa) in Chinese luxury EVs. In Malaysia, where extended family trips are common during festive periods, high-comfort 6-seater layouts with ceiling screens and onboard cooling directly appeal to affluent family buyers.
To circumvent import duty restrictions on EREVs, the incoming General Manager will likely evaluate local assembly (CKD) options early. Partnering with established local automotive assemblers would allow Li Auto to price its EREV range competitively against luxury Japanese and German ICE offerings.
While pure BEVs face public range anxiety on cross-country trips (e.g., Kuala Lumpur to Penang or Johor Bahru), EREVs offer an electric driving experience with zero range anxiety. If marketed effectively, Li Auto can establish a unique segment between traditional hybrids and pure electric cars.
