Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Malaysia

Roald Dahl’s world of chocolate rivers, golden tickets and Oompa-Loompas is heading to Selangor, with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory set to make its Malaysian stage debut from 22 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.

The Broadway musical will be presented at the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre, bringing Dahl’s story of young Charlie Bucket and his extraordinary visit to Willy Wonka’s mysterious factory to local audiences. The production is presented by Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, in association with Sunway South Quay Sdn Bhd.

Classic Story

Based on Dahl’s 1964 novel, the musical follows Charlie after he discovers one of five Golden Tickets hidden inside Wonka chocolate bars. His prize is a tour of the eccentric chocolatier’s factory, where he encounters fantastical inventions, unusual characters and a series of unexpected challenges.

The stage production combines elements from Dahl’s original story with songs familiar from the classic 1971 film. These include Pure Imagination, The Candy Man and I’ve Got a Golden Ticket, alongside original music by Grammy and Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, whose previous credits include Hairspray and Mary Poppins Returns.

For its Malaysian engagement, the production forms part of an international tour that follows a run at Shanghai Culture Square in November 2025. The wider tour is scheduled to travel across Asia, the Middle East and India, with cities including Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Hainan, Taipei and Seoul among its stops.

Musical Stage

The touring production also brings together a Broadway creative team with specialists in stage illusion, projections and puppetry. Las Vegas magic and illusion designer Tim Clothier has developed new theatrical effects for the production, while the wider team includes set and costume designer Mark Thompson, projections designer Jeff Sugg, lighting designer Rory Beaton and puppet designer Basil Twist.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory originally opened on Broadway in 2017, running for more than 300 performances before embarking on a four-year North American tour. The musical also had a run in London’s West End, where it received two Olivier Awards.

The global tour is directed by Matt Lenz, with choreography by Alison Solomon and musical supervision by Nate Patten and Greg Jarrett. The production is based on the original Broadway direction of four-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien and choreography by Joshua Bergasse.

With its Malaysian run scheduled over the year-end holiday period, the production offers audiences an opportunity to experience Dahl’s familiar story through a large-scale theatrical adaptation, bringing Wonka’s fantastical world to the stage at Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre.

Tickets are available through CloudJoi, with the Malaysian engagement running from 22 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.
