Moomin

First introduced in 1945, the Moomins have become enduring figures in children’s literature, with their stories exploring friendship, individuality and the relationship between people and the natural world. Created by Finnish artist, illustrator and writer Tove Jansson, the characters are now the inspiration for a new collaboration with Bottega Veneta.

The collection brings Jansson’s distinctive illustrations into the Italian house’s leatherwork, drawing on the colours and details of the original comic strips. Rather than simply reproducing the characters, the designs interpret their imaginative surroundings through texture, colour and artisanal techniques.

Familiar characters, new forms

Moomin-inspired motifs appear across leather charms, everyday accessories and selected Bottega Veneta bag designs, including the Andiamo and Campana. The house’s signature Intrecciato weaving also takes on a different character, with colours drawn from scenes in Jansson’s illustrated world.

The collaboration reflects a shared interest in individuality and self-expression. Jansson’s stories often centre on characters who embrace their differences, while Bottega Veneta’s approach to craftsmanship places emphasis on the distinctive qualities of materials and the hands that shape them.

The collection will be introduced in Japan through an animated film featuring the Moomin characters carrying Bottega Veneta bags through an enchanted woodland, where flowers and trees bring the illustrated setting to life.

The launch begins with an exclusive presentation at the Isetan Shinjuku pop-up on 11 November. From 18 November, the collection will also be available at Bottega Veneta’s Ginza, Omotesando and Umeda Hankyu stores, as well as online.
