Art Basel will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) will house the returning Art Basel Hong Kong art event this March 2023 with 177 galleries from 32 countries and territories. This is an exponential increase from the previous year which saw 130 exhibitions so it is bound to be a much more lively event as well.
Since this iteration of the Art Basel will also be the first to take place after Hong Kong lifted the mandatory hotel quarantine, the show will also be returning to its two-floor format again. This will make for a broader appeal to a wider audience with many different tastes from all over the world.
Moreover, the 2023 Art Basel show will also see 22 first-time exhibitors from all across the globe including regions and countries such as mainland China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America too.
The return of the 2023 edition of the Art Basel show also marks the return of Encounters, which is the show’s sector dedicated to large-scale works. This time, the exhibition is curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, the Executive Director of Artspace, Sydney, as well as Kabinett featuring thematic presentations, a first to feature all special sectors in Hong Kong since 2019.
Among the galleries at Art Basel you can feast your eyes on will be Retro Africa. This contemporary art gallery — a first time exhibitor at the show — also features a solo booth by Nigerian visual artist, Victor Ehihkamenor, who will showcase art from his Rosary and perforation series.
David Zwirner will also have a booth at Art Basel which will feature four new works from American artist, Jordan Wolfson This will include three new wall-mounted plywood and aluminium panel works which feature images of iconic figures and stock photos from pop culture.
Hauser and Wirth will also bring together a mesmerizing group of contemporary and historical works by leading gallery artists such as Rita Ackerman, Louise Bourgeois, George Condo, Nicole Eisenman, Gunther Forg, Roni Horn, Mike Kelley, Takesada Matsutani and Pipilotti Rist among others.
Naturally, there are many other captivating and gorgeous displays for you to indulge your eyes. If you’re an art lover and appreciate the beauty of design, Art Basel is definitely not a show you want to miss.
